Most of us have been through some pretty scary stuff throughout our lives and we are all impacted differently. Sometimes that scary stuff finds a way to creep into our present moment; making it hard for us to live the way we want to. We might feel nervous, tense, or even terrified just trying to get through our day. We might get angry without understanding why or we might get so distracted by our memories it’s like we never really escaped the past.
I started my education and career with intentions of addressing the impacts of traumatic experiences. I am nationally certified in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), which is a leading modality in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in youth.
I use similar approaches in working with adults overcoming trauma. Counseling is tailored to the individual, but common methods include mindfulness, becoming attuned with the body, exposure to memories within a safe place, and evaluation of how one’s thoughts affect their feelings. Across the board, establishing a sense of meaning and empowering one to achieve their goals, is a powerful piece of the process.
It is possible to cure, yes cure, PTSD. And regardless of diagnoses, you can regain your life.
